Exploring The 4 Different Branches Of Dermatology

The field of dermatology encompasses the study of skin and skin-related ailments, but there are many subspecializations within dermatology as well. Some doctors get comprehensive degrees in general dermatology, while others undergo additional education to further hone their knowledge and expertise within a specific area. For those seeking specialization, they can choose to specialize in one or all of the following four main branches: dermatopathology, pediatric dermatology, Mohs Surgery, and cosmetic dermatology. Below, we discuss each of these four branches in depth.

Dermatopathology

Dermatopathology is a subspecialty that combines dermatology with pathology, or the study and identification of diseases using samples of hair, skin, etc. These samples are examined under a microscope located in a laboratory. Dermatopathology allows specialized dermatologists to study the causes and effects of diseases of the skin, hair and nails, and to accurately diagnose them in their earliest and latest stages.

Pediatric Dermatology

If your child suffers from a disease that affects the skin, hair, or nails, your child may benefit from seeing a pediatric dermatologist, especially if the disease is one that’s more prevalently diagnosed in children such as atopic dermatitis. A pediatric dermatologist specializes in diagnosing and treating children, including newborns and infants.

Mohs Surgery

If you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer, you may be referred to see a Mohs surgeon for treatment. A Mohs surgeon performs a specialized type of surgery called Mohs surgery, which is used solely to treat skin cancer. After completing their residency, some dermatologists continue their studies and receive advanced training in Mohs surgery. Some may even go on to complete a fellowship in Mohs surgery.

Cosmetic Dermatology

In this branch of dermatology, the dermatologist uses treatments to improve the appearance of the skin. Cosmetic dermatology is called such because it is not a necessary component of maintaining good health. Cosmetic dermatology includes procedures such as dermal fillers and Botox to smooth fine lines and wrinkles or increase facial volume, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and laser therapy to diminish the appearance of scars, wrinkles, etc.
